Website costs
Business website costs: what does a company website really cost?
What does a company website cost over 36 months? Cost types, scope, and an honest calculation formula for your budget planning.
In short:
- The one-off price says little — what matters is total cost over 36 months including operation, content, and further development.
- Compare quotes by scope, copywriting, migration, ownership, and exit terms, not just the starting price.
- Calculate with this formula: one-off costs + (36 × monthly costs) + (3 × annual costs) + extras.
Why do website prices vary so much?
A lean company website with five pages carries different costs than a multilingual corporate site with CRM integration, a careers portal, and a download centre. A price is therefore meaningful only alongside the agreed scope.
A clearly defined fixed-price package can be a good fit. Custom requirements need additional discussion of goals, content, integrations, and operation. This article explains which costs to budget for and how to compare quotes with different scopes.
Which cost types belong to a business website?
Split every quote into four blocks:
- One-off costs: concept, design, technical implementation, copywriting or copy optimisation, image research and licences, content entry, migration, testing, and go-live.
- Monthly costs: hosting or platform fee, maintenance and updates, backups, monitoring, support allowance, optionally ongoing SEO or content care.
- Annual costs: domain fees, SSL certificates (if billed separately), plugin or tool licences, audits.
- Extras: logo adjustments, photo shoots, videos, translations, integrations, training, additional landing pages.
For each block, ask: what is included, what is optional, and what is billed by time and materials? Do not count services included in a maintenance package again as separate costs. An SSL certificate, for example, may already be included in hosting at no additional charge.
The 36-month formula for honest total costs
Many projects look affordable in the quote because only the build is priced. Always project each quote over 36 months:
Total cost (36 months) = one-off costs + (36 × monthly costs) + (3 × annual costs) + extras
A worked website budget example
The following fictional amounts excluding VAT illustrate the formula. They are neither Contentoren prices nor market averages:
- One-off: €8,000
- Monthly: €49 (hosting, updates, backups)
- Annual: €120 (domain plus licences)
- Extras during the period: €1,500 (photos, extra pages)
Calculation: 8,000 + (36 × 49) + (3 × 120) + 1,500 = 8,000 + 1,764 + 360 + 1,500 = €11,624 over 36 months.
Insert your own quoted figures into the same formula. Compare prices consistently including or excluding tax and account for agreed price increases. Add internal time for copywriting, coordination, and approvals if you want to assess the full economic cost.
Comparing scope: ask every provider these questions
- Scope: How many pages, templates, and modules are included? What does each additional page cost?
- Copy: Do you write the texts yourself, or does the agency provide clear answers to customer questions? These are also the foundation of GEO and AI search and local visibility.
- Technology: How fast and accessible is the implementation? Who maintains content afterwards — and how easy is it?
- Migration: Are content, URLs, redirects, and tracking carried over? For rebuilds, our website redesign SEO checklist helps.
- Platform choice: Does the CMS fit your team? Also read the WordPress drawbacks for business websites.
Operation, ownership, and exit: read the fine print
Review the contract terms as well as the scope:
- Operation: Who applies updates, who monitors backups and forms, which response times apply?
- Ownership: Who owns the design, code, copy, images, domain, and accounts? Do you receive admin access?
- Exit: Can you change hosting and providers without rebuilding the website? Are there notice periods or buyout fees?
- Rental models: Some offers are effectively rentals — when the contract ends, the site is gone. Calculate these honestly over 36 months too, and ask about a buy-out option.

Frequently asked questions
What does a professional business website cost?
It depends on scope, copywriting, migration, and ongoing maintenance. So do not compare the one-off price alone — compare total cost over 36 months: one-off costs plus 36 times monthly costs plus 3 times annual costs plus extras. You will find our current package and service overview on the pricing page.
Which ongoing costs apply after launch?
Typical items are hosting, domain, SSL, updates, backups, monitoring, minor adjustments, plus optional SEO, content, and support. Clarify upfront what is included, what is billed extra — and who owns the design, copy, data, and accounts.
How do I recognise comparable website quotes?
By a clearly defined scope: page count and modules, copywriting, image rights, migration of content and redirects, technical foundation, ownership and exit terms, and response times during operation. If these points are missing, you are comparing quotes with gaps.
